On January 19th, the unveiling ceremony for the Frontiers Interdisciplinary Research Institute (School of Future Technology) was held  at WUT’s Junshan Campus. Secretary of the CPC WUT Committee Meng Fangbing, President Wang Fazhou, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Zhang Qingjie, and Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Jiang Desheng, Zhang Lianmeng, Yan Xinping, and Fu Zhengyi attended the event.

In his speech, Meng Fangbing stated that the establishment of the Institute represents WUT’s strategic initiative to implement the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and its subsequent plenary sessions, as well as to serve the country’s self-reliance in science and technology. It was also a significant measure for WUT to address national strategic needs and promote deep interdisciplinary integration. Facing the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, WUT would adhere to the core philosophy of “breaking barriers and fostering integrated innovation”, focusing on frontier directions such as future manufacturing, future information, future materials, and future energy. WUT would carry out organized scientific research and development efforts, striving to become a source of original innovation and a provider of key technologies.

It was reported that the institute would implement a new type of scientific research organizational model characterized by “Leadership by Chief Scientists, Supported by Teams, and Driven by Projects”. This model would promote deep integration across disciplines like science, engineering, medicine, and humanities, and establish a collaborative innovation consortium comprising universities, research institutes, enterprises, and government agencies. The goal was to tackle the long-standing challenge of the gap between scientific innovation and industrial commercialization, thereby facilitating the transfer of scientific achievements from the laboratory to the production line. In the future, this institute aimed to become not only an academic hub for interdisciplinary research but also a crucial platform for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and the incubation of future industries, contributing to Wuhan’s ambition of building itself into a nationally influential center for technological innovation.
